Cir-pad: circularity and innovation for furniture products

Developing innovative, circular padding solutions for the furniture industry is possible! We are talking about the results of CIR-PAD, a EUROCLUSTERS RE-CENTRE funded project that Matrec implemented in collaboration with Mondo Espansi. After nine months of research and development, we presented the final proposal for an innovative and circular padding solution for the furniture sector.

During the project, new organic and recycled materials were researched and tested, which properly processed and assembled by Mondo Espansi are transformed into a padding with the same resilience as traditional ones on the market. The final padding solution is designed to be repairable and disassemblable and is composed with 83,5% recycled materials and 55,3% renewable source materials. Materials that have environmental certifications such as Gots, Global Recycled Standard, Oeko-tex and Plastica Seconda Vita that together account 99,9% of the materials used.

CIR-PAD was a successful challenge in developing new circular design solutions for the furniture industry. Circularity results, as measured by Matrec’s CircularTool, clearly showed a circularity rate of 83,5%, disassemblability of 67,5% and reparability of 72,4%.

This is an important achievement especially because the recent final approval of the EU ESPR (Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation), which sees the furniture sector among the priorities for action.
