Five of Europe’s leading cell phone operators, Deutsche Telekom, Orange, Telefónica, Telia Company and Vodafone, have joined forces to promote a labelling scheme for cell phones, built around a measurement system that assesses their environmental impact.
The main purpose of the initiative, called Eco Rating, is to support users in making more conscious choices and to stimulate manufacturers in the sector to reduce the environmental impact of their devices.
The rating considers as main indicators the efficiency in the use of materials and the related carbon footprint, product durability, repairability and recyclability.
The platform assigns a score based on the environmental performance of the product considering the entire life cycle, giving a final score on a scale from 1 to 100, where 100 is considered the best score for a mobile phone.
