KFC Canada has taken new action to reduce the environmental impact of the single-use plastic items and packaging that have characterized the fast food industry to date. In some of the chain’s restaurants, compostable cutlery combining a two-in-one spoon and fork made from bamboo fibres, corn and sugarcane has been introduced. The blend of these renewable source materials is compostable at room temperature and requires no additional treatment.
Numerous initiatives dictated by the group’s sustainability strategy have been undertaken by KFC Canada, resulting in the elimination of 50 million plastic straws, 10 million plastic bags and 22 million Styrofoam containers over the past year, replacing them with circular fiber-based materials.
