Polestar has designed the new “Polestar O₂” electric sports car that looks towards environmental sustainability. Applying the principles of eco-design, the company chose to make a unibody from different grades of anodised aluminium with a high strength-to-weight ratio, forming a rigid yet lightweight structure.
To facilitate the recycling process at the end of its life, the company decided to label the different grades of aluminium, so that materials with the same properties could be recycled and the best possible quality obtained.
The same strategy was pursued in the design of the vehicle’s interior, with a single thermoplastic material being used for soft components such as foam, 3D knit upholstery and non-woven lamination, to facilitate the recyclability of the interior components.
