Recycled polycarbonate CD

Sonopress, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of storage media, has long been working to reduce CO2 emissions in the production of CDs and LPs. The company, on the occasion of the premiere of Coldplay’s album, presented the EcoCD, a CD made of 90% recycled polycarbonate derived from post-consumer waste streams, the remaining 10% being made of plastic produced from fossil fuels.
The use of recycled material reduces the CO2 emissions associated with the material by 78% during production, compared to a conventional CD using virgin material.
Considering the production of Coldplay’s next album, this will avoid the production of more than five tonnes of virgin plastic.
For the production of the EcoCD, Sonopress had to modify its conventional injection moulding machines so that they could adapt to the different viscosity of recycled polycarbonate.
